DNA changes in a nonischemic area of the rat myocardium in experimental myocardial infarct and its prevention

DNA damage and repair in the nonischemic area of the heart were analyzed after experimental myocardial infarction to evaluate the effect on these processes of the beta-blocker inderal and lipid peroxidation inhibitor ionol. It was found that in the nonischemic area of the heart, DNA damage was manifested by the decreased polymerism averted to a significant degree by inderal and ionol which interfered with postinfarction activation of lipid peroxidation. Accordingly, inderal and, to a greater degree, ionol reduced postinfarction activation of DNA repair synthesis in the nonischemic area of the heart.     

Aphanizomenon ovalisporum (Forti) in Lake Kinneret, Israel

The filamentous cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon ovalisporum wasobserved for the first time in Lake Kinneret in August 1994and formed a prominent bloom from September through October.Aphanizomenon ovalisporum reappeared in diminished amounts inthe summer and fall of 1995. These events are the first recordof significant quantities of a potentially toxic nitrogen-fixingcyanobacterium in this lake. No definite provenance of inoculumhas been identified, although A.ovalisporum was also observedin a newly reflooded area (Lake Agmon) in the catchment. Unusuallyhigh water temperatures and low wind inputs were observed priorto and during the A.ovalisporum bloom period. These, togetherwith possibly enhanced availability of phosphorus or other growthfactors, may have contributed to the cyanobacterium growth in1994. Phosphorus limi tation, as indicated by high cellularalkaline phosphatase activity, the onset of stormy conditionsand a fall in water temperatures led to the demise of the 1994bloom. Although the A. ovalisporum bloom in 1994 had no seriousdirect impact on water quality, the continued presence of apotentially toxic cyanobacterium in Lake Kinneret, a major nationalwater supply source, is a cause for serious concern.     

Pendelluft flow in symmetric airway bifurcations.

We propose a mathematical model for pendelluft flow in a single airway bifurcation. The model is motivated by an apparatus used in an experimental study of the pendelluft by Ultman et al. (1988). We derive differential equations governing the fluid flow, which directly connect physiological parameters to the variables determining the pendelluft; this approach allows us to include nonlinearity in the model. If nonlinearity is neglected, our model is identical to the R-I-C circuits used by previous investigators. If nonlinearity is retained, we show that pendelluft can occur even in perfectly symmetric airway bifurcations. For the specific apparatus used in the experiments of High et al. (1991), we demonstrate that two qualitatively different pendelluft flows can occur in the system.     

Venography in the evaluation of the results of surgical treatment of varicocele in children]

The paper is concerned with analysis of the results of intraoperative phlebotesticulography, performed in 50 patients with varicocele of degree I-II during Ivanissevich's operation. The effect of surgical intervention was shown to depend upon the quality of ligation of the testicular vein, some parts of which are anastomosed between themselves. The localization of this anastomosis is revealed by means of intraoperative phlebotesticulography, which permits increasing the results of surgical treatment and predicting a course of a postoperative period.
